SILENT SENTINEL STANDING WATCH

Pine Hill Cemetery's Civil War Soldier statue, stands guard over the "final resting place" for some of Westfield's Civil War Veterans. Statue was presented by Edwin Lay to the Grand Army of the Republic Lions Chapter 100 years ago.
Organized June 3rd, 1842 and consecrated May 14th, 1843, this beautiful and quaint, New England cemetery lies nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires. It is a non-denominational cemetery, catering to the needs of all. The large, native stone gates, connected by wrought iron fencing, protect the cemetery and welcome the visitors. All are gifts of early benefactors as is the stone chapel with stained glass windows, standing silent sentinel at the main gate. The cemetery has its own forest and the grounds are dotted with every type of native tree imaginable. The full beauty can best be appreciated when the adumbration of winter sets the New England landscape ablaze with vibrant color. Through the years, the cemetery caretakers have kept the picturesque appeal of the cemetery alive by maintaining the old, narrow, winding roads and even keeping the grass-covered, carriage paths in place, for all to use. The casual visitor can spend hours immersed in history, visiting the graves of governors and senators, entrepreneurs and generals. From the Grand Army of the Republic tier, Revolutionary War soldiers, to the graves and memorials of Vietnam Veterans. The monuments bespeak the early history of Westfield; The doctors, farmers, and merchants that made it happen. The horse-drawn hearses, with wagons and buckboards in toe, have long since disappeared but that’s what it was like when we started. We welcome you to Pine Hill, for whatever reason, as we enter our 3rd century of service to the Westfield area.
